What Are Spiritual Gifts and How Do You Discover Yours?

Have you ever wondered why certain things seem to come naturally to you spiritually, while others struggle in those same areas?

Perhaps you recognize things before others do. Maybe you have dreams that seem unusually significant. Or you find yourself encouraging, teaching, discerning, or helping people in ways you never formally learned.

Could these experiences be connected to your spiritual gifts?

The Bible teaches us that God has given spiritual gifts to believers for the benefit of the Body of Christ. However, discovering those gifts is only the beginning. Understanding how they operate and how to develop them is equally important.

What are spiritual gifts?

Spiritual gifts are abilities and manifestations given by the Holy Spirit to serve God's purposes.

In 1 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul identifies several manifestations of the Spirit, including prophecy, discerning of spirits, words of wisdom, words of knowledge, faith, healing, and miracles.

Romans 12 also identifies gifts such as teaching, exhortation, giving, leadership, and mercy.

These passages help us understand that spiritual gifts are not limited to preaching, prophesying, or holding a position in the church.

Your spiritual gift may be functioning in your everyday life before you fully understand what it is.

How can you recognize your spiritual gifts?

Begin by asking yourself a few questions.

What spiritual activities seem to come naturally to you? What do others consistently recognize in your life? Where have you seen evidence that God uses you to help, strengthen, or encourage others?

And perhaps most importantly, are those experiences consistent with Scripture?

Spiritual gifts should not be identified simply because something feels supernatural. They must be examined through biblical understanding, spiritual maturity, and appropriate accountability.

Is having a spiritual gift the same as having a ministry office?

No.

This is one of the most important distinctions we teach at the Global Institute of Church & Marketplace Prophets.

A person may prophesy without being called to the office of a prophet. Someone may experience visions without necessarily functioning as a seer. Likewise, someone may possess strong spiritual discernment without being assigned to a particular ministry office.

Gift, function, mantle, and assignment are connected, but they are not interchangeable.

Understanding those differences can save you years of confusion.

What should you do next?

If you believe you have spiritual gifts but are uncertain how they operate, begin with education, prayer, and intentional development.

At GICMP, we've spent more than 25 years helping prophetic voices understand their gifts, identify their areas of development, and prepare for their assignments.

Our Prophetic Assessment is designed to help you begin that process with greater clarity.
